Jul 2016 to Sep 2016
1975 ° Beiroet, Libanon, woont en werkt in Luik

For the first edition of the new annual exchange program between AIR Antwerpen and RAVI, Liège visual artist Marie Zolamian is invited for a residency of three months in AIR Antwerpen, during which she is researching the phenomenon of the Antwerp Zoo and its appropriation architecture of the original surroundings of the animals.

The practice of Marie Zolamian can be seen as a series of sequences that ultimately constitute an experimental documentary of a fictional ethnology, through which she tries to seize the heritage of an elected community that is unknown to her. Marie Zolamian questions the notion of belonging to a territory, to a surrounding. These 'chosen exiles' in micro-communities bring forward micro-stories and recompose mental images. They mostly rely on a story, a testimony that affects the individual and the community, based on a subjective attachment to a place or an inherited object. In the end, these are repeated integration attempts, through learning process, adaption, mimetism, during which discordant relationships are established between identity, tradition and authenticity, between locality and culture. The work process is based on serial production of portraits, of links between the environment and a personal or collective history. Each series is a visual archived trajectory, starting from an unknown here moving to an unknown there.

Marie Zolamian studied fine arts at the Royal Academy of Liège and La Cambre in Brussels. Zolamian was invited for the following solo exhibitions (a selection): Memento, Galerie Nadja Vilenne, Liège, 2016; Ne pas confrondre la réalité des images, City Hall of Chênée, Liège, 2015; I am a man now, what do you want more?, Künstlerhaus Bethaniën, Berlin, 2013; The disoriented, Galerie Nadja Vilenne, 2012; Untitled, La Châtaigneraie, Flémalle, 2011.
