Luisa Ungar

Jun 2017 to Nov 2017
2017 lives and works in Bogota and Amsterdam

Luisa Ungar is invited for a residency of five months in AIR Antwerpen.

The work of Luisa Ungar explores how social norms are constructed and institutionalized through language. She is interested in collective memory, modes of representation and historic narratives put forth by pedagogical discourses. Her recent work deals with narratives involving animality and the non-human in colonial circuits.

Looking at mechanisms and thought process that questions ways in which local history is constructed, she often seeks to re-connect archived or academic material into everyday popular use, looking at the structural violence that exists in the act of interpretation. She uses a variety of media including performance, sculpture, drawing and text.

Luisa Ungar was invited for the following solo exhibitions: Willing Suspension of disbelief, CuratorLab, Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm, 2016; This Time the Rabbit Looks Down: Chocolate Crying, Ruper, Vilnius, 2016; Pavillion, Centro de Arte 2 de Mayo CA2M, Madrid, 2015; Animal Magnetism, Gasworks, London, 2014. Episodes of her on-going performance Clapping Backwards have been showed in the context of Spring Workshop's program Des hôtes: a foreigner, a human, an unexpected visitor, in Hong Kong 2015 and as part of the program De-skilling curation at Artis Royal Zoo Library, Amsterdam, 2016. Her works were shown in the following group exhibitions (a selection): Los Multinaturalistas, MAMM, Museo de Arte Moderno, Medellin, 2017; AUN 44 Salon Nacional de Artistas, Pereira, 2016; Europa, arteBA, Buenos Aires, 2015; John Smith, the Posthuman, Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, 2014; Performance Festival, Cali, 2013.
