Ani Schulze

Apr 2016 to Jun 2016
1982 lives and works in Frankfurt am Main

Ani Schulze is invited for a residency of three months in the framework of the exchange – and exhibition project Staat van de Stad/ State of the City/ Zustand der Stadt. During this residency she works on a new project, which will be presented in the exhibition at basis e.v. Frankfurt am Main, opening 13 October 2016.

Her work is concerned with exploring histories of failed utopias, abandoned places and unfinished stories through observing these objects. These investigations foster the characters and structures that inhabit her narratives, getting visible through different kinds of media like film, works on paper and spatial installations. She merges into the history of architectural constructions, technological and industrial devices and playfully engages with afterworlds and underworlds of modernity. Stepping away from traditional linear narratives, her practice likes to compose an unstable relationship between imagination and reality. This might be illustrated by the interplay between text and image, where one guides the other and misleads the other, too, creating a fictional vortex, unhinging the expected connections of image creation, language and perception.

Ani Schulze studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main; the Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf and Kunstakademie, Karlsruhe. She has been invited for the following exhibitions (a selection): It’s There But It’s Not There, Kunstverein Scotty, Berlin, 2016; From Aerial Vortices, CEAAC- Centre Européen d'Actions Artistiques Contemporaines, Strasbourg, 2015; Eating Out, Roberta Gallery, Frankfurt, 2015; Open House, Kunstverein, Braunschweig, 2015; Sneaking Home, Opelvillen, Rüsselsheim, 2015; Poltroneria, Museo Apparente, Napels, 2014
