"All Signal No Message"
Milena Bonilla and Luisa Ungar

Meeting point: Bookshop

"All Signal No Message" unfolds the research that Milena Bonilla and Luisa Ungar have mobilized for act IV of "On Acausal Connecting Principles." During their time in Antwerp, the artists have approached the Krakatoa eruption vis à vis the “Colonial and Export Exhibition” which took place in Amsterdam exactly at the same time. What substrata connect the unconscious logic of the volcano to the oppressive taxonomy of colonial reason?

Continuing their research and performance project "Pavillion," the artists employ a variety of materials, archival items and linguistic artifices. This presentation weaves actions and conversations following the idea of volcanic life as a dormant interactivity between lifeforms. Addressing movement as grammar, communication as raw material and information as currency, they intend to establish a game between what we are supposed to know and the vulnerability triggered by uncertainty and unpredictability.’

7:30 pm
"Sunset Blister"
Ivan Cheng

There are many types of abrasion but a limit to transformation. "Sunset Blister" is a new work by Ivan Cheng performed with Ivey Wawn in their first appearance since 2014. Alongside a video, it is prepared in tandem with 4 workshops for English speaking youth aged 8-15 in Antwerp, and the production of a glass wind instrument blown from melted volcanic pumice, produced by Eric Pipien at LUCA Ghent.

This performance will occur on the rooftop terrace, irrespective of weather. Please dress accordingly.

Like a spy, IVAN CHENG has been working from the position of “between” throughout the entire duration of the project. Using observation as a means of operating, Ivan Cheng moved as a liaison; documenting, channeling, performing, and listening to the various acts composing the project. Named as an act in itself, Intermezzo’s proposes a possessive on the singular noun, and re-interprets the gleaned knowledge, reporting after a duration of “passing-as.” Intermezzo's also marks the opening of the finissage, a non-exhibition of all that is left behind, leading to new beginnings and life forms.

➤ ON ACAUSAL CONNECTING PRINCIPLES is a durational exhibition and performance program in five acts curated by the Amsterdam curatorial initiative Heterotropics at MHKA, Antwerp, in the framework of their LODGERS program. Inspired by the Jungian notion of synchronicity, the project adopted the coincidence as a curatorial methodology to research nonlinear time, while questioning the interplay of psychic and physical states.

➤ ACTS by Sara Giannini (in collaboration with Raoul Audouin, Adam Bobbette, Mehraneh Atashi (with the participation of Geo Wyeth), Milena Bonilla & Luisa Ungar, and Ivan Cheng.
