Yuji Watabe

Dec 2005 to Jul 2006
1974 Lives and works in Kitakyushu, Japan

Yuji Watabe is invited for a residency of 6 months in AIR Antwerpen. During this period he will work on a new set of drawings inspired on the harbour and its surroundings. As part of his residency Yuji Watabe will give an artist talk about his current projects.

Yuji Watabe’s practice consists mostly out of drawings, directly put onto the wall. Hereby he uses photographic projection as his guide. His work contains strong photorealistic qualities. His style is linear and poetic and often refers to a melancholic presence. With his pencil he retraces the lines of portraits and his subjects as to emphasize the contours as well as the shadows.

Yuji Watabe’s recent exhibitions include: Last show in the gallery, HELENE NYBORG CONTEMPORARY, Denmark 2011; ART FAIR KYOTO, Hotel Monterey Kyoto, Japan 2011; Volta show, New York 2011; You know me, art space BAKU 2nd., Fukuoka, Japan 2009; VOLTA show 3, Basel, Switzerland 2007.
