Malthe Stigaard

Oct 2011 to Mar 2012
1978 Denmark

AIR Antwerpen invited Malthe Stigaard for a residency period as part of their programming direction around the notion of identity and autobiographical practice.

Malthe Stigaard describes himself as a social tourist. In his work he investigates people: how do they interact with each other? How do they act in public circumstances? Through film, performance and text he analyzes the ‘surfaces’ of others to dig out the content underneath. With his camera he enters and records their privacy and exposes these to the viewer. He reveals intimate secrets both of his peers and him. Through this process he questions how we live our lives socially in a contemporary Western society.

Malthe Stigaard was born in Denmark but lives and works in Amsterdam. After a degree in art photography and a bachelor in business language at the Copenhagen Business School, he graduated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam in 2011. He participated in the following group exhibitions (selection): Dutch Film Festival, Utrecht, 2011; Nacht Kerk, SMART Project Space, Amsterdam 2009; Photographic Tendencies, Henningsen Contemporary, Copenhagen, 2008; r-EXPOSED, Sziget Festival Budapest, 2007; Just Landed in the Center of the City, City Hall, Copenhagen, 2006. He had a solo show at Gallery Rumkammerat, Copenhagen, 2007.
