Exhibition Project Cité-Action, in collaboration with QUSS vzw

Bifurcaçoes e encruzilhadas: sobre la igualdad y las diferencias II: a casa ao lado, is a new project of Carla Zaccagnini, in collaboration with Liesbet Sablon and Sofie Geelen. It is a comparative study of archeological excavations in two abandoned houses on the same street. This project belongs to a wider group of works that I have been developing during the last couple of years, generally titled Bifurcaçoes e encruzilhadas [forking paths and crossroads]. The many different works that compose this research are dedicated to the collection and investigation of things that are at first sight different but somehow obey to the same principle, and, on the other hand, to things that are supposed or expected to be identical and end up being slightly different. Sobre la igualdad y las diferencias II: a casa ao lado [about equality and differences II: the house aside] is a work developed for the exhibition Cità-Action, which took place in Assenede, Belgium, in august, 2006. The project was made in collaboration with the archeologists Liesbet Sablon and Sofie Geelen. It consists on an archeological investigation of the artifacts found in two abandoned houses located in a same street. The houses, bought by the city to be demolished, had remained closed for a couple of years, keeping the objects their last inhabitants had left behind untouched. Besides documenting all the groups of objects found, the excavations were focused on the identification of similar artefacts found in both contexts.

Following archaeological criteria, the objects similarity is usually based on their function. In certain cases though, this proximity is based on elements represented or depicted on objects that serve different human needs or tasks. Side by side, these artefacts establish an indicial universe of the needs, habits and tastes of these individuals or family groups who once lived in those houses, close in space and time. But this approximation also
points at the peculiarities of personal choices, which are also part of history.
