André Romão

Jul 2012 to Nov 2012
1984 Lissabon

André Romão was selected out of an international open call initiated by the Middelheim Museum and AIR Antwerpen. During a residency of 4 months at AIR Antwerpen André Romão will work on a site-specific installation for the fourth edition of “De Sokkel”, an exhibition project of the Middelheim Museum in the city park of Antwerp. On the 7th of October 2012 there will be a reception to celebrate the new production.

André Romão departs from the medium of sculpture, opening it up in the multimedia based installations. André Romão's work explores both the overlapping of and the flaws and absences of sense in historical, literary and artistic episodes. Such exploration has as a goal the opening up of a broad field of meaning, a precarious ground between ethics and aesthetics, politics and poeticcs, historiography and mysticism. The artist acts through a continuous research on the human aspects that can be found in cultural production and, more specifically, in the inevitability of transition within historical cycles.

André Romão was selected for the following solo-exhibitions (a selection): Barbarian Poems, Galleria Umberto di Marino, Naples, 2011; The Pavillion of Progress/ The Pavillion of Fall, Galeria Baginski, Lisbon, 2010; The Vertical Stage, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, 2010;  Everything last forever, Solo projects – ARCO Madrid, 2010; The Winter of (our) Discontent, Kunsthalle Lissabon, Lisbon, 2010. His work was shown in the following group exhibitions (a selection): As Artes, Cidadaos!, Serralves Museum, Porto, 2011; Res Publica, Fundaçao Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon, 2010; On the Razor’s Edge, Galeria Heinrich Ehrhardt, Madrid, 2009; A River Ain’t Too Much to Love, Spike Island Art Center, Bristol, 2008.
